Love your warm-weather outfits but want to get more use out of them as the weather change? Read on to find out how to transition summer clothes to fall. These tips and tricks will help you take your favorite summer pieces into autumn.
Disclosure: Sympli sent me the fashions above for editorial consideration, but all opinions and fabulous styling are my own.
If you are anything like me, you probably have a few items of clothing that you have been wearing nonstop all summer long and get tons of compliments on. And even though the weather is changing and it’s getting cooler, you are having a hard time letting go to your favorites.
Well, I am here to tell you that you don’t have to! With some clever styling, you can most likely re-purpose many of your favorite fashions well into Fall and Winter, let me show you how I did it.
A Summer Look
I was smitten with this fab boho Sympli Fringe Vest all summer long. I wore it to festivals, outdoor concerts, movies and even to the beach because is it so comfortable, great for travel and adds chic finishing touch to almost any outfit.
I totally love the flow and movement of this fringe vest and I feel like it will never go out of style.
I paired it with Sympli’s Palazzo Jolt pant (love the almost-to-the-knee slit) and their comfy and versatile Go To Tank Top.
I added a sparkly wedge pair of sandals and some dangling silver fringe earrings to finish off my go-to summer look.
This outfit makes me feel so stylish and well put together.
So you’re probably not surprised that I don’t want to give up this fab vest as the weather is getting cooler, so I decided to restyle and cozy it up for Fall.
A Transitional Fall Outfit
How did I do it? I layered the fringe vest over a three-quarter sleeve ruched waist-fitted white top. This works especially well for those days where it’s cooler in the morning and at night but comfortable during the day.
I can push up the sleeves as it warms up, and the extra layer of the vest won’t be too much.
I paired it with slightly faded jeans and knee-high black suede boots with a fringe tassel. This outfit feels totally different and perfect for fall!
A long chic, modern necklace finishes off the look.
As much as I loved wearing this vest during the summer, I think I like my cool weather styling even better because it shows off my curves.

Tips to Transition Summer Clothes to Fall
So how can you continue to wear your favorite pieces during Fall? Here are a few easy tips to help you re-purpose your summer faves.
1. Layer
Add a long-sleeved top in the same or complementary color family can be worn underneath your more open warm-weather styles. This works for the vest I’m sharing above but also sundresses and other tops.
Throw a cute sweater around your shoulders or wear it over your sleeveless or spaghetti strap summer maxi. Over the shoulders makes it more of an accessory while wearing it over the dress gives the outfit a whole new look.
Whether you see the layer or just add one so you can more easily tolerate the dipping temperature, layering is my favorite tip!
2. Make it Cozy
This goes in line with layering but one of the things we love most about fall is that we get to bring out the cozy pieces. Adding a chunky cardigan or one with a shawl collar that you can snuggle into can instantly make even a plain t-shirt or tank top ready for fall.
3. Darker Tones
Add darker, more seasonal tones to your outfits. Whether in accessories or a cardigan, adding in jewel tones and other colors that are more traditionally seen during autumn months, you can pull summer pieces into another time of year.
4. Add a Scarf
A scarf not only adds a bit of warmth but also pizzaz! Wrapped for colder days and worn drapped around your shoulders on warmer days, a scarf is a functional wardrobe piece that can transition things like lighter blouses or dresses into cooler weather.
4. Sock with Sandals
This isn’t for everyone but you can stretch out your summer sandals by pairing them with socks. In California, we can pretty much wear sandals all year long. But if you’re in a climate that gets chilly, this is a real solution.
The way to make this look more fashion than function is to be aware of the overall look. Make it look intentional rather than lazy. Mixing prints and colors can make it the perfect footwear for a simple outfit.
5. Accessories
Accessories are a great way to make a summer look feel more autumnal. A belt can take a flowy dress with a boho vibe and make it feel more finished and less like a cover-up. Bracelets and necklaces can make a look feel finished and make the illusion of covering up some skin.
6. Chunkier Shoes
Even changing up your shoe can make a summer dress feel more weather appropriate. Ditch the sandals and add a chunkier shoe or bootie. It helps to ground the outfit and especially when paired with a jacket, the vibe is totally different.
7. Fall-ify Dresses
I’ll admit, I wear less dresses in the fall because I hate to be cold. But there are ways to change up the look to make it better for cold weather.
- Pants under a dress is a totally fun look! You can take a flowy dress and pair it with jeans for a trendy look that will keep you warm.
- Boots that are high can add warmth under a skirt or dress.
- Tights are always a good way to keep your bare legs a little bit more protected.
- A turtleneck under a spaghetti strap dress is just darling.
8. Minimize Bare Skin
By covering up bare skin, you can instantly put of fall and winter vibes. Whether that is pairing taller boots with a longer skirt or adding a cute ruana to cover bare arms, look for pieces in your closet that you can use in a new way.
Even layering two summer pieces to cover your arms or legs can make it feel more transitional.
