After 25 years, ‘The Lion King’ is still a visually stunning timeless classic that continues to touch your heart and take your breath away
I recently attended Opening Night of Disney’s The Lion King at the Hollywood Pantages and after 25 years of gracing stages all over the world, this heartfelt, timeless, visually ground-breaking musical is still just as impressive as it was the first time I saw it over 20 years ago.
In the opinion of this seasoned theater-goer and passionate musical theater buff, The Lion King is still one of the most awe inspiring, picturesque, visually stunning, theatrical spectacles that has ever graced a Broadway stage. Once you catch a glimpse of the larger than life giraffes strut down the aisles and see birds flap their wings and fly through the air and admire the beauty of gazelles leaping and hear the hyenas laugh and the lions roar and as you begin to witness the entire Serengeti come to life before your eyes, you start to understand what all the hype is about as you start to get lost in the magic and wonder of The Lion King.
The Lion King has won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and it has brought together one of the most imaginative creative teams in Broadway’s history. These theatrical geniuses include visionary Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor, Tony Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan and well-known Tony Award-winning artists Elton John and Tim Rice. These brilliant artists have made The Lion King one of the best, most groundbreaking beloved musicals of all time.
The overall staging, casting and performance quality of this production of The Lion King was as good as ever, however a few standouts included the spot on comedic timing, acting and puppeteering of Nick Cordileone as Timon and John E Brady as Pumbaa as well a powerful voice and charisma of Gugwana Dlamini as Rafiki.
However, what makes this production of The Lion King extra special is seeing it come to life against the gorgeous art deco back drop of the landmark Pantages theatre. The design and beauty of the Pantages adds an additional element of entertainment and visual stimulation to this iconic show. So needless to say, I highly recommend seeing The Lion King at the Hollywood Pantages even if you have see it many times before, it is definitely a feast for the senses!
‘The Lion King’ is now playing at the Pantages Theatre through March 26, 2023. Get your tickets HERE
