‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ is a modern uplifting musical about acceptance, belonging, and the power of unconditional love
I recently attended opening night of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at the Ahmanson Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles and it is exactly the kind of uplifting, fun, feel good entertainment that we all need right now. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a fresh, modern and relevant story that celebrates acceptance, belonging, and the power of unconditional love.
This uplifting musical is inspired by a true story that centers around the buoyant eccentric gay teenage boy named Jamie New who dreams about becoming a drag queen. Jamie lives in a small conservative British town where he doesn’t quite fit in and the kids at school make fun of him. However, the good news is that Jamie has an incredibly loving and supportive mother who loves him just the way he is, she believes in him and she encourages him to be true to himself and pursue his dreams of becoming a drag queen against all odds.
As this heartwarming story unfolds, we watch Jamie follow his dream of becoming a drag queen with some bumps along the way but eventually he overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies, and steps out of the darkness and into the spotlight. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is filled with incredibly fun, catchy modern pop rock style singing and dancing, drag queens and an inspiring story that makes you feel like anything is possible when you embrace who you truly are and who you were always meant to be.
This production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie features the delightfully talented and affable Layton Williams as Jamie and over-the-top drag queen legend Bianca Del Rio aka Roy Haylock (winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”) as Loco Chanelle/Hugo. Both of these wonderful actors are reprising their roles from the original West End production of this musical and they are joined by vocal powerhouse Melissa Jacques as Margaret/Jamie’s Mom and the fierce Shobna Gulati as Margaret’s best friend and chosen family member Ray (who also stars as Ray in the New Regency film version of the musical.)
I can’t RAVE enough about Everybody’s Talking About Jamie! It is everything I love about musicals ~ modern, fresh, boundary pushing, inspiring, great dancing and catchy memorable songs. The entire ensemble is amazing and I have been playing the entire album on repeat since I left the show because it brings a smile to my face and it lifts my mood every time I listen to it 🙂
If you love modern style musicals and need a little lift these days, go see Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at the Ahmanson Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles before it ends February 20, 2022
